Vyborg wins multipurpose ice pair

Russian shipbuilder Vyborg, part of state-owned United Shipbuilding, has won an order for two diesel-electric multipurpose icebreakers from compatriot energy company Gazprom. The two 22 MW vessels are scheduled for delivery before 2018. They will operate at the arctic terminal of the Novoportovskoye field on the western bank of the Ob Bay in the Yamal peninsula. They will be used for escorting tankers, assisting with mooring and loading, rescue operations, towing, firefighting, oil response, and recovery operations and have icebreaking capabilities of up to 2 m, along with the ability to operate in temperatures of -50ºC. No costs were disclosed for these newbuildings.
